The Fellowship of Christian Counselors is sponsoring a Conference on Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Taylor University, Fort Wayne, called “The Role of the Holy Spirit in Counseling and Shepherding.”   See bottom of page for online payment options and registration form:

DR. SIANG YANG TAN will be the conference keynote speaker.  In three presentations, he will cover the crucial role of the Holy Spirit's ministry, including His power and spiritual gifts, truth, and fruit in effective Christian counseling. Implicit and explicit integration in Christian counseling will be described, with an emphasis on explicit integration that includes the use of prayer (including Inner Healing Prayer), the Scriptures, and referrals to church or parachurch groups. Ethical guidelines for the appropriate use of explicit integration in Christian counseling will also be provided."

 

Dr. Tan is a Professor of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary, Graduate School of Psychology.  He completed a PhD in Clinical Psychology at McGill University in 1980.   He has a private practice through the Clinical Practice Plan of The Psychological Center, Graduate School of Psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary, including providing some pro bono services. Clients seen include those with phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, stress and burnout, anger control problems, marital and family problems, adjustment disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, pain, hypertension, and religious conflicts and issues.

 

 

From 1996, Dr. Tan has served as Senior Pastor and English Pastor, First Evangelical Church Glendale.  He was ordained on Sept. 29, 1996.  He originated in Singapore, and he is married with two grown children.

·        National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) Award for Contributions to Racial and Ethnic Diversity, at the NCSPP Meeting, Toronto, Canada, August, 1993

 

·        Distinguished Member Award, the Highest Honor from the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS) International, at the CAPS International Convention, Colorado Springs, Colorado, April, 1999.

 

·        Gary R. Collins Award for Excellence in Christian Counseling, from the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), at the World Conference on Christian Counseling, Nashville, Tennessee, August, 2001.

 

·        William C. Bier Award for Outstanding and Sustained Contributions to the Applied Psychology of Religion, from Division 36 (Psychology of Religion), American Psychological Association, at the APA 110th Annual Convention, Chicago, Illinois, August, 2002..

The conference The Role of the Holy Spirit in Counseling and Shepherding” will take place on March 17, 2007, beginning with registration at 8:00 a.m.  Worship will begin at 8:30 a.m. and Dr. Tan will begin speaking at 9:00 a.m.   Dr. Tan will speak the remainder of the morning and immediately after a lunch break.  Four local experts in Christian Counseling will present afternoon workshop sessions.  A Panel Discussion will conclude the day’s schedule from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

 

 

The afternoon workshops will include:


             "Forgiveness and Inner Healing", 
Tim Warner, Ed. D., and Eleanor Warner – In this workshop, Dr. and Mrs. Warner will explore the 
connection between obedience to the biblical command to forgive those who sin against us and 
finding inner healing for the emotional hurt produced by the sin.  Special attention will be given to sins 
of sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence. The biblical basis, the relationship to discipleship, and the 
steps in the healing process will be explored and illustrated.
 
             "Biblical Counters To Common Thinking Errors",  
Wyatt Mullinax, D. Min, AAMFT, ICAADA, NADAC – Dr. Mullinax will present on the process of cognitive 
renewal, focusing on the most common thinking errors.  Biblical truth counters to these thinking errors 
will be described and illustrated.



            "Using Scripture With Anxiety and Depression", 
Jerry Davis, Ph.D., LCSW, LMFT, LMHC, and NCC – Dr. Davis will illustrate how Scripture can be used to 
address anxiety and depression. Specific focus will be given to using the truth of Scripture to counter 
typical cognitive distortions associated with anxiety and depression.

 

 

        "Developing Resilience and Maturity Through Joy"
Rev Dick Hostetler, Thriving Life Ministries and Gret Machlan, MSW, LCSW , Family Care Center
In this workshop,  the presenters  will describe how we can encourage the development of
resilience and maturity in counseling through experiencing joy in the context of loving attachments.
Focusing on trauma and distress, the presenters will integrate the best of neuroscience research
and scripture.
